Happy Platinum Jubilee (even the Republicans)
I am not a monarchist, also not a curmudgeon, this pretty much sums up my whole take on this.
Heaven knows we need a celebration after the 2 long years of Covid nonsense and commemorating 70 years of the same Queen, why not? I was ill through the Silver Jubilee so I am owed this one!
So the flags are up, something of a family tradition, and I am a moderate patriot. If their fluttering brings others joy that is a bonus, I can vicariously enjoy their enjoyment. The sun is up, the birds are singing and the country is in party mode. I am giving in and enjoying it.
Pageantry, bunting, silly hats and having a knees up, we as a nation we are pretty good at this, something to really appreciate. I look around and see that there are many, many, many worse places to live.
A Constitutional Monarchy is not ideal, no system is, but I have accepted that it leads to a certain level of stability and continuity that is not reflected in other states. An apolitical head of state is useful in diplomatic terms and can provide solace and inspiration during times of crises.
I spoke to a German recently, he was asking about our Bank Holidays, he was full of admiration for the longevity and hard work of our Queen. I even detected a hint of jealousy, it’s interesting to view this from an outside perspective.
And yet, I accept that Monarchy is absurd and expensive; I also accept that this Queen seems on the whole, pretty good. It remains to be seen if her successors match up her standards
I am happy to hold these contradictory thoughts at the same time.
So I will ooh at fireworks, wave at the street parties, look out for beacons, raise my glass and smile, it’s an imperfect country but it’s ours.
